“Till death do us part,” not “Till a better offer do us part.”

Jesus demands that marriage be permanent, so we cannot divorce and remarry, but we can seek an annulment.

    Hi Fr. Carrozza,

I appreciated your homily today. This reading can be a difficult one for me. I am divorced and received my annulment in the Catholic Church about 1 year ago. It’s still hard….and was not my choice. I meant my vows and tried to restore my marriage for over 22 years. Like you mentioned, God and the Catholic Church does not want us to stay in abusive situations. And I most indeed was….and under constant oppressive stress. My husband was also chronically unfaithful…but with men instead of other women. It was a chaotic, stressful, confusing, painful, mess. I’m incredibly thankful for the 3 kids from my marriage who are my joy! They are all in their 20’s now, and are all doing well in life, praise God.
I’m glad you took the time to really talk about annulment. My annulment was based on my husband acknowledging that he had same sex relationships prior to our marriage, but I didn’t know this. The end of a marriage is painful, no matter how it comes about. I had so much hope in the beginning. I was married for 22 years….so it’s also hard to hear that the marriage was not valid all those years. While it’s correct, it’s hard to know that I spent so many years of my life in a ‘dead’ relationship that has taken so long to heal from.
I doubt I will marry again. I just don’t see it happening. I haven’t even been on a date or anything. No desire to date, really. I just knew that I wanted the ‘slate’ ti be clean and be free of my ex-husband. I heard many of the untruths about annulment that you mention. It was a difficult process for me, to relive everything. But I would say it has been worth it and was part of my healing.
    Blessings,

    Sarah

Wow! You were really sent through the wringer! I’m glad you got out of that sad situation, and I hope it has brought you closer to Jesus. Many people are not aware of the intense pain others go through when trying to make a failing marriage work, but your faith in Jesus got you through, and you have a great story of hope to tell others. God bless you always!!
